West Virginia is comprised of some 34 species of salamanders and 14 species of frogs
and toads. Much of this diversity can be attributed to the state's mild climate and rugged
topography. Elevation ranges from 240 feet at Harpers Ferry to 4,861 feet at Spruce
Knob. The Appalachian Plateau has an average temperature of 54 degrees Fahrenheit
and an average of 43" of precipitation, Allegheny Mountains 49 degrees Fahrenheit and
54" of precipitation, and the Ridge and Valley 53 degrees Fahrenheit and 37"of
pricipitation. These areas make up the three physiographic provinces in West Virginia.
