There are 13 bat species found in West Virginia, all being from the evening or
common bat family. Three are federally listed as endangered and 2 are listed as
species of special concern. Endangered species include the Indiana bat, Virginia
big-eared bat, and gray bat. Species of special concern include eastern
small-footed bat and Rafinesque's big-eared bat. West Virginia forests provide
summer maternity roosts and feeding areas. Eastern counties contain vast arrays
of cave networks that are used as winter hibernaculum. Abandoned mine portals
created by decades of mining are also used.
