West Virginia is home to 24 families of fish comprised of 178 species. Many people associate fish only with sport species but approximately 80% of West Virginia fish are nongame. Minnows, suckers, sculpins, and freshwater eels are examples of nongame fish. Some gamefish include catfish, pike, trout, and bass. There are no federally protected fish species in West Virginia, however some species such as the candy darter receive special attention because the vast majority of its distribution is found in West Virginia.
