West Virginia is home to 20 species of snakes, 13 species of turtles, and 6 species of lizards. Snakes range in size from the small and secretive 6 inch worm snake to the 7 foot black rat snake. There are only two venomous snake species, the northern copperhead and the timber rattlesnake. Turtles range in size from the small 5 inch spotted turtle to the large 17 inch common snapping turtle that can weigh over 40 pounds. Some West Virginia reptiles, such as the six-lined racerunner, are only known from a single location. Others, such as the black rat snake, are very common.
We use the following techniques for reptile studies:
Drift Fence Arrays
Hoop Trapping
Radio Telemetry
Visual Encounter Surveys
